Feds expand F-150 fuel tank strap investigation to 2.7 million pickups

The Ford F-150 has been the best-selling truck in America for decades. That's a very big feather in the Blue Oval's cap, but when the truck line is bit by the recall bug, its massive volume can be a very bad thing.
The Detroit News is reporting that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced that it has upgraded its investigation into 2.7 million 1997-2001 F-150 pickups for fuel tank straps that have rusted and failed. If the straps rust and fail, NHTSA says there is a chance that the tank could drop and hit the road, causing a fuel leak. Back in September, NHTSA's initial investigation included 1.4 million vehicles.
Of the 339 complaints NHTSA and Ford have received so far, one has resulted in a brief fire that quickly flamed out, while a second complaint lead to a fire that actually destroyed the vehicle. According to the report, there have been a total of nine documented incidents in which fuel has leaked from the tank as a result of a failed tank strap, though there have no injuries linked to these incidents.
For its part, Ford says it is continuing to support NHTSA's investigation. The government safety agency says its investigation has "yielded information that strongly suggests the subject defect as the cause of the reported problem," suggesting a recall may be on the horizon.

Virgin says it will take time to know the extent of the advance it has made with the major aerodynamic upgrade package the team has brought to Turkey, after effective running with it was cut short to just one session because of the poor weather. GM employs a safer seatbelt to retain five-star safety ratings
General Motors, like all automakers, is constantly researching new means of keeping its customers safe. One of the primary lines of defense inside an automobile is the seatbelt, and GM has fitted some select vehicles with an updated latch system that gives engineers greater control over tensioner tuning. It's this increased level of control and tunability that has helped a handful of General Motors vehicles retain their five-star crash safety ratings, even as the tests get tougher.
Called the Dynamic Locking Latch Plate (DLLP), the system provides greater control over a passenger's torso in a crash. The DLLP buckles also allow GM safety engineers a greater degree of fine-tuning to make sure the airbags and belts are working together to keep the interior a safe place.
Ever since the New Car Assessment Program was updated, automakers have had to work harder to achieve five-star crash ratings. General Motors vehicles equipped with its DLLP seatbelts are scoring well in NCAP testing. Not every model gets the updated tech, but GM is utilizing the technology throughout its fleet as needed.

Jamie Whincup made it two wins out of three at Barbagallo as he overcame a tough challenge from race two victor Jason Bright to triumph in the final leg of this weekend's triple-header. Honda delaying next CR-V

According to Bloomberg, Honda has delayed the release of the next-generation CR-V as a result of supplier constriction brought on by the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear tragedies in Japan. The report says that the 2012 Honda CR-V will debut a month later than originally anticipated, though that model won't be the only vehicle in the Japanese automaker's stable impacted by the events. Bloomberg also notes that the recently unveiled 2012 Honda Civic will see limited production for the next few months, as well.
Honda also announced that it will begin production of the CR-V at the company's Alliston, Ontario manufacturing facility while continuing to build the vehicles in East Liberty, Ohio as well.
Like most Japanese automakers, Honda says that full-scale production won't resume until late 2011 as the rebuilding process continues. Toyota recently announced that the company's operations have been cut to 50 percent capacity and that it doesn't expect to see full production again until December at the earliest.

FIA reveals DRS area for Turkey
The FIA has confirmed that the DRS activation zone at this weekend's Turkish Grand Prix will start shortly before Turn 11. As AUTOSPORT revealed last week, the FIA has decided to stretch the activation area so it is between Turn 10 and Turn 12 - which means it will run through the fast right-hander onto the back straight. The detection zone for the DRS will be shortly before the braking zone for Turn 9

Reindler, Owen escape serious injury
V8 Supercar drivers Karl Reindler and Steve Owen were fortunate to escape serious injuries in a huge startline accident in race two at Barbagallo. Reindler stalled his Brad Jones Racing Holden on the grid and was powerless to prevent Owen from ploughing into the back of him at 90mph and causing his car to burst into flames. Merhi takes Hockenheim victory
Roberto Merhi survived a late race attack from Marco Wittmann to win the first Formula 3 Euro Series race of the weekend at Hockenheim. The Prema Powerteam driver held on to the lead from pole position after defending from his team-mate Daniel Juncadella at the start.

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG isn't exactly subtle to begin with, but Kicherer's take on the theme is decidedly more... stealthy. For starters, the German tuner wrapped the car in matte black vinyl for a more subdued look. It then replaced the big Silver Star in the mouth with a blacked-out blank grille that looks like a baleen whale's mouth. And while the rims on the 20-inch wheels (21 in the back) are polished for a little contrast, the spokes get a blackout treatment as well. Matte-finish carbon fiber trim and aero pieces complete the overall package.
Underhood, the engine has been tuned from the stock 563 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque up to 621 horsepower (equivalent to 630 on the metric scale, hence the 63 moniker) and 516 lb-ft. That's good for a claimed 3.5-second sprint to 62 mph and a 199 mph top end. Have a closer look in the gallery below.

Lorenzo takes first pole of 2011
World champion Jorge Lorenzo took his first pole position of the season in qualifying for the Portuguese Grand Prix, as Marco Simoncelli's bid for the top spot ended in a crash. Having been fastest in both Friday sessions, Simoncelli looked favourite for pole as he set a dominant pace for the majority of qualifying as well. But Lorenzo edged ahead of the Italian going into the final five minutes, and as Simoncelli tried to respond and earn Gresini a first MotoGP pole in over five years, he had a low-side crash at Turn 7.

Jaafar joins F3 International Trophy
British F3 racer Jazeman Jaafar will compete in the inaugural FIA F3 International Trophy this year, which gets underway at Hockenheim this weekend. The Malaysian will compete for an F1 Superlicence in the six-race series, which will also visit Pau, Spa, Zandvoort, Macau and Yeongam.

The Monday Night V8 Supercar sessions have produced some of the most memorable online racing seen on the iRacing simulation, along with capacity fields on an average of three splits for each of the two main Monday evening events. As if you needed any reminder, in the 1971 film Vanishing Point, a character by the name of Kowalski is tasked with making it from Colorado to San Francisco in a 1970 Dodge Challenger. Kowalski bets a friend that he can make the run in just 15 hours, but - Spoiler Alert - he doesn't make it... and neither does the muscle-bound coupe. The flick has been a cult favorite for years, and one of its fans, Bob Frederick of New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, got some help from Chrysler to create 10 2011 Kowalski Edition Dodge Challengers.
Starting life as a traditional 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392, these white coupes have had their stripes removed and a handful of options added on. Inside, a pistol-grip shifter sits at attention and a numbered dash plaque is mounted nearby. On the outside, the Kowalski Edition Challengers sport Mopar quad exhaust tips, Scat Pack Bee decals in the rear quarter windows and a tasteful Kowalski Edition decal on the rear spoiler.
All 10 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 Kowalski Edition cars have been spoken for, so if any owners are reading this and want their car delivered quickly, we can help set that up. We promise to avoid bulldozers and the fuzz.

Carlos Huertas set the pace in both sessions of pre-race practice ahead of British Formula 3's second round at Oulton Park this Easter weekend.
